Our first experience with VolunTeens will be Wednesday, June 23 from 5-7. We will meet at 420 E. Blaine St., behind the Missouri Hotel. It’s the old Kitchen warehouse, if you are familiar with where that is. There are several pallets of donations from Convoy of Hope that need to be sorted through to restock the Outreach Center at The Connecting Grounds.
The work is extremely important and the warehouse will be hot, so youth should dress appropriately. Sarah can arrange transportation, but you will need to let her know by Tuesday, the 22nd at the latest if your kids need a ride. Any rides provided will only happen if there are two adults present.
The following week (June 30) the Cooperative Youth Group is tentatively scheduled to swim at the Goodes’ house on Portland Street right by National Avenue Christian Church.
Last Wednesday 17 youth from various progressive churches in the city met at Big Slice on East Sunshine for our first gathering. Our former transitional Regional Pastor, the Rev. Dr. Christine Chenoweth personally footed the bill for the meal.
Ten of Brentwood’s youth were there. Our own Mike Van Cleave, who has agreed to be our Youth Spiritual Advisor, led the group in a couple of wacky ice breakers. A duck and a bunny were involved. He also talked with youth about the importance of building relationships with each other.
Christie Love, pastor of The Connecting Grounds, and Amanda Leach, their Youth Director talked about VolunTeen nights and the important work of that part of our ministry together. David Nordyke, Associate Pastor of Southstreet Christian Church, led a discussion of contemplation and what it is.
Some of our older youth facilitated and then demonstrated how pairs of kids could get out of a rope bind. Others took turns welcoming friends and strangers from the churches and escorted them to our meeting space.
At the end, everyone was invited to say what they heard someone else say. “I heard someone say …”
It was a good beginning.

Children’s Ministry Updates
Friday Night Fun Nights for Children
Please let Sarah know by this Sunday, June 20 if you plan for your children to attend the June 25 Friday Fun Night. (No need to if you already have.) There may be water balloons involved so be sure to keep that in mind for clothing. Drop off time is 5:30 and pick up is at 7:30. One of our kids has a birthday that very same day so there will be cake and ice cream instead of s’mores in addition to pizza!
Our next evening of fun for 3 year olds through 5th graders is Friday, June 25 from 5:30-7:30. Please let Sarah know by Sunday, June 20 if you plan to bring your children. We are doing this with our friends from Trinity Presbyterian.
Volunteers needed: Because we are enjoying so many children on these evenings, we need two people who are willing to serve the food and lemonade, cook the s’mores, and help with wiping down tables. There is very little prep as we serve pizza. Please contact Sarah if you are able to help. And, thank you in advance!
